Does your BMW need a service?
An InspectionThis can either be an Inspection I or an Inspection II. Both inspections are a major service involving a detailed and thorough check of your BMW, paying particular attention to the engine, fuel system, brakes, suspension and other safety related parts. The two inspections differ where an Inspection II includes all of Inspection I, plus a check over the more durable aspects of your BMW, which include spark plug renewal, parking brake lining thickness check and main fuel filter renewal. Thanks to the advanced technology of BMW's Service Interval/Residual Mileage Service Interval Indicator nothing could be simpler. With most cars, service intervals are fixed, and based solely on distance covered. Your BMW is fitted with a far more sophisticated system that actually takes into account your driving style, and calculates service intervals accordingly.
What does your Service Interval Indicator tell you?
Your Service Interval Indicator will tell you not only when maintenance is due, but whether your BMW needs:
An Oil service - an intermediate service which includes a change of engine oil and oil filter as well as a specific check on brake pad wear.
An Inspection - a major service involving a detailed and thorough check of your BMW, paying particular attention to the engine, fuel system, brakes, suspension and other safety related parts.

When you switch on the
ignition, you'll see up to five green lights on your LED display.
The fewer of these that come on, the sooner your next maintenance
will be due. The green light will go out once the car has started.
As long as at least one green light is showing, you don't need any maintenance.
Some time after reaching the final green light, an orange light will come on, together with the words "Oil Service". This means an oil service is due. If you ignore this a red light will come on, indicating that the oil service is overdue.
Following an oil service, your Service Interval Indicator is re-set, and you will now see five green lights again when you switch on the ignition.
The green lights will again go out one by one, counting down to your first inspection.
When the green lights have all disappeared, an orange light will come on, together with the word "Inspection". As before, if you ignore this a red light will come on, indicating that the inspection is overdue.
Following your inspection, your Service Interval Indicator will be re-set.
At regular intervals, the clock symbol will appear, telling you when your BMW's break fluid needs to be renewed. Depending on the model you drive, this will either be every 12 months from delivery, or every 24 months.
On completion of your brake fluid change, our Service Interval Indicator will be re-set and the clock symbol will disappear.
Using the Residual Mileage Indicator Note:
Only applicable for 3 Series models from 1998.
As soon as you switch on the ignition, your BMW's Residual Mileage Indicator will show you the remaining number of miles before maintenance work is needed. It will also indicate whether an inspection or Oil service is due. The residual mileage figure is reduced in 50 mile steps until the next maintenance work is due. If maintenance work is overdue, the display will flash and a minus sign will appear before the figure. In addition, by pressing the right hand button on the instrument cluster, you can call up the date for your next brake fluid renewal. The clock symbol remains visible all the time if a brake fluid change is due.
